Nationwide prenatal screening in the Netherlands started on January 1st, 2007. Each pregnant woman can now opt for a test to determine the risk of a fetus with the Down Syndrome, a structural ultrasound examination of the fetus at c. 20 weeks, both screenings or none at all. Together with various stakeholders BMA has developed its own quality system for prenatal screening based on the specifications laid down by the RIVM (Rijksinstituut voor Volksgezondheid en Milieu | National Institute for Public Health and the Environment). The QSPS by BMA – the Quality System Prenatal Screening – enables the optimal assessment of the quality of the care chain process, including all aspects of prenatal screening. The QSPS can also be made available as a regional variant fully tailored to local requirements. Both systems are now operational in university hospitals in the Netherlands.
